A collection of the weird, interesting or funny sites I've come across while conducting internet archeology
Have you seen the collection of .gif buttons in the footer of my homepage?
I get a huge kick out of them. To me, they are the perfect symbol of the age of the decentralized internet, those buttons represent what people thought important enough to attract the attention of site visitors with funny animations (or just as validly for me, an advertisement put there out of obligation)
I got them mostly from gifcities, a searchable collection of geocities .gifs hosted by The Internet Archive, but .gifs weren't the only thing I found. No, I found a veritable treasure trove of random "lost" websites that would otherwise be collecting dust in the coffers of The Internet Archive
When something is remembered only in a massive archive, with basically no hope of being found due to drowning in the sea of information, can it really be said to be remembered?
I don't think so, Metal Gear Solid 2 taught us that message. Thus, here are my highlights. Selected for preservation in my own collective memory.
I'll add more to these pages as I go on.
I once saw it described that in the "presearch engine era", browsing the web was more of a treasure hunt than a simple search query. This is an inefficient method of information retrival, but when it's something you do for fun rather than out of necessity it's actually a blast. Finding the long forgotten treasures is what this page is dedicated to (was that cheesy enough?).
